MUNICIPALITY ON A GROWTH PATH
18 September 2024 – Polokwane is on a growth path to create opportunities for stimulating the local economy and to create jobs on a fast lane drive for service delivery.
Representing the Executive Mayor Cllr Makoro John Mpe, during the Traditional Leaders Forum, the MMC for Water and Sanitation Cllr. Motlogeleng Moakamedi said Polokwane is on a growth path and has started to get a nod and support from the national government through engagement to support the municipality’s developmental agenda.
“We are doing our best to create opportunities for job creation through implementation of our capital projects that are being implemented around the municipality.
“We are also using the land at our disposal to attract big business to set up and create pockets of economic centres in Polokwane to stimulate the economy and create job opportunities for our residents.”
Beyond the public-private partnerships, the municipality has recently hired and promoted about 50 employees in various posts as part of its recruitment drive.
On service delivery, he said that although the municipality has done a lot over the years to change Polokwane for the better, there is still more that needs to be done to address the persisting challenges and backlogs.
“We acknowledge the backlogs, especially with regard to sanitation and waste management and we are diligently addressing these backlogs.”
Moakamedi also emphasised that roads remain an important catalyst for economic activity and the creation of job opportunities.
He said it is for this reason that the municipality is implementing projects to ensure the tarring and paving of more roads per cluster.
“We continue to prioritize strengthening of our yellow fleet capacity because we are aware that most of our roads in rural areas are not accessible.”
He also mentioned that the municipality is in engagement with Roads Agency Limpopo on the D-Roads.
The Traditional Leaders Forum sits on a quarterly basis for the municipality to engage and update the traditional leaders on service delivery issues.
