THE MUNICIPALITY OBSERVES WORLD ELDERLY ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH

MATOBOLE, 27 June 2024 – June is World Elderly Abuse Awareness month, a time when the global community voices its condemnation of the abuse and suffering inflicted upon the older generation.

In observance of this month, Polokwane Municipality is hosting an Elderly Awareness Day focusing on abuse and other social issues. The event is taking place at the Matobole municipal offices under the Molepo/Chiene/Maja Cluster.

Numerous elderly men and women are in  attendance to voice their thoughts and concerns about issues affecting them in their households and communities.

“Every elderly person is responsible for the well-being of other elderly individuals. We need to support each other socially. No elder person should feel unsafe when their neighbours can help. Let’s help one another,” said Daniel Monyama from the Department of Social Development.

Attendees were advised to utilize government services such as SAPS and social workers to report any abuse or ill-treatment they might experience in their households.

“Every elderly person has a right to a healthier mind, body, and soul,” Monyama concluded.
