POLOKWANE MUNICIPALITY OBSERVES MANDELA DAY WITH CITY CLEAN-UP INITIATIVE

Polokwane, Thursday 18 July 2024 – Polokwane Municipality rolled up its sleeves and got to work in tribute to Nelson Mandela Day.

The Executive Mayor, Cllr Makoro John Mpe, along with the Chief Whip of Council, Cllr Phetola Rapetswa, members of the Mayoral Committee and Municipal Manager Ms. Thuso Nemugumoni, led a team of municipal officials, including uniformed staff and police officers to the streets armed with brooms, paintbrushes and a lot of enthusiasm.

Nelson Mandela Day, celebrated annually on 18 July, honors the legacy of South Africa’s first black president and his 67 years of public service. This day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world and the ability to make an impact. Polokwane Municipality’s initiative embodies Mandela’s spirit of selflessness and community service, encouraging citizens to contribute to the greater good.

Before and after the initiative, Executive Mayor Mpe expressed his gratitude to the municipal officials for their love for their city and their enthusiastic participation in the clean-up. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a clean and welcoming environment for the residents and businesses of Polokwane. “We must teach our children and businesses to keep their city clean,” he said. “By coming together, we can make our city a better place for everyone.”

The day’s programme kicked off at the corner of Thabo Mbeki and Dahl Street, extending to the corner of Hospital and Landros Mare Street. The Executive Mayor introduced a new loader, an important tool in the fight against illegal dumping.

The teams then dispersed across the city with brushes, brooms, and a shared sense of purpose and tackled a variety of tasks:
o Painting road markings and curb sides to ensure clear, visible guidelines for all road users.
o Fixing stormwater drainage to prevent future flooding and water damage.
o Repairing graveyard infrastructure to honor the resting places of the departed with care and respect.
o Cleaning and patrolling the street to enhance both cleanliness and safety.
o Checking vehicle and driver compliance to promote road safety and legal adherence.

“Let us continue to work together, not just today, but every day, to keep our city beautiful and prosperous to honour Mandela’s legacy and make a lasting difference,” concluded Executive Mayor Mpe.
