POLOKWANE TAKES MAYORAL OUTREACH TO THOKGWANENG TO COMBAT GBV AND PROMOTE COMMUNITY SERVICES

Thokgwaneng, 04 December 2024 – The mayoral outreach and bathopele awareness is in session at Thokgwaneng village in Ga-Maja as part of the 16 days of activism against gender based violence and femicide and to bring service provided by departments closer to the community.

The outreach campaign is a collaboration between the municipality and SAPS.

Thokgwaneng has been identified because of the alarming rates of gender based violence, rape and housebreaking cases. There are also reports of substance abuse and a lot of taverns in the area.

MMC for Community Safety, Cllr Josuf Pemma who also represented the Executive Mayor, said one of the most pressing issues faced by society is gender-based violence. “This form of violence is a scar on our society, affecting women and children.” He emphasised that GBV is not just a law enforcement issue, “but a societal problem that demands a united response from government, private sector partners and communities”.

Government remains resolute in the commitment to tackle GBV.

This is done through initiatives such as the establishment of Gender-Based Violence Desks at every police station and the designated Victim-Friendly Rooms (VFRs).

He said the “SAPS is working to ensure that victims receive the care and protection they deserve. These safe spaces allow victims of intimate violence to share their stories in private and supportive environments, ensuring that justice can be pursued without fear”.

Various departments like Sassa, LEDET and Home Affairs are part of the programme to provide services, exhibit and promote the services that they offer to the community.
