#ReagaPolokwane | EXECUTIVE MAYOR LEADS HIGH-LEVEL DELEGATION TO ADDRESS UL CHALLENGES
UNIVERSITY OF LIMPOPO, 01 November 2024 – In a committed response to the pressing needs of the University of Limpopo community, Executive Mayor Cllr. Makoro John Mpe, alongside members of the Mayoral Committee and municipal officials convened today with the University management led by Vice-Chanchellor Professor Mahlo Mokgalong, student representatives and representatives from Lepelle Northern Water. The engagement focuses on addressing crucial challenges impacting students and staff, with water supply, street lighting and student safety high on the agenda.
With a resolute stance, Executive Mayor Mpe emphasized the municipality’s commitment to ensuring the university community has access to essential services. He stressed the urgency of the water supply: “I have been monitoring. The team must tell me where there is no water anywhere in the municipality. Let’s work together because, in the end, we need to come up with solutions. We have identified illegal water connections in Mankweng, compromising the pipeline meant to serve our residents. It is our responsibility and in our best interest to deliver water to our people. We cannot allow our municipality to fall behind in its commitment to our residents and institutions.”
The Executive Mayor acknowledged the need for direct and efficient communication channels with the University and the hospitals to provide immediate updates on any disruptions. This approach aims to enhance transparency and reduce the impact of unforeseen challenges.
To ensure swift action, the Executive Mayor announced the formation of a specialized task team to address the water issues specifically, led by MMC for Water and Sanitation, Cllr. Alfred Moakamedi. This task team will engage with the affected university community and work in collaboration with Lepelle Northern Water to devise sustainable solutions.
The Executive Mayor reiterated his commitment to the well-being and safety of all residents and stakeholders in the municipality, promising a unified approach towards lasting solutions.
