POLOKWANE MUNICIPALITY MAINTAINS UNQUALIFIED AUDIT OPINION FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR
Polokwane Municipality has once again demonstrated its commitment to sound financial management and good governance by maintaining an unqualified audit opinion for the third consecutive year.
This achievement endorses the municipality’s persistent efforts to strengthen accountability, enhance financial controls and improve service delivery to the residents of Polokwane.
The audit report was presented before the Ordinary Council Meeting on Thursday, 30 January 2025 by Lerato Bopape from the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA). The report highlights a notable reduction in findings, reflecting improvements in key areas such as Local Economic Development, consequence management and financial compliance.
Despite this significant milestone, Executive Mayor Cllr Makoro John Mpe has called for further improvements to sustain and build on this success. “We need a strong and credible audit action plan to ensure that recurring findings are eliminated. While we celebrate maintaining an unqualified audit opinion, we acknowledge that there are critical issues that require systematic intervention. In Polokwane, we are driving a culture of accountability and efficiency. We are working towards reducing audit findings and ensuring that our financial systems remain reliable. Going forward, we must enforce consequence management for late report submissions and enhance the financial management systems of Polokwane Housing Association (PHA).”
The Auditor-General’s report also noted improvements in infrastructure maintenance, resulting in a 24% reduction in water losses. In its quest to improve service delivery, the municipality has committed to tackle challenges including the rising electricity losses and an overburdened wastewater treatment plant.
Polokwane Municipality will continue working towards strengthening internal controls, implementing effective audit resolutions and ensuring sustainable service delivery for all residents.
